Learning Objectives - Reduce Room

Here is the Learning Objectives in REDUCE ROOM. 
  • To identify what is waste and the impact of waste to the environment.
  • To identify what is packaging and its impact of creating waste.
  • To explain the relations on buying less packaging and the problem of waste.
  • To list others ways of reducing waste.
  • To relate the implementation of reduce to real life.
After you complete the task, you are expected to achieve the following learning outcomes:
  • To identify the problem of large volume of waste created in our daily life.
  • To understand the impact of waste to the environment, for example, poor environment and unhealthy city, insufficient landfills and etc.
  • Be able to list the ways of reducing.
  • Be able to relate and apply the knowledge and develop new living style and habits in an environmentally friendly manner.

Green Party!!


Christmas is coming!
Your group has been selected to organize a Christmas Party for your class.
How would you organize this party in "Green Way"? Think about how you will decorate and prepare for the party (such as room setting, tableware,gift, wrapping and invitation card)? How can you reduce the waste in such party? 

Discuss with your group member and prepare a plan for this Green Party, i.e. list out the items you suggest to use in the party and other details you may think of).

Post your plan on your blog to share with the others.




Survey of living habits


How much do your famiies waste every day?
You can see how much waste your families created every day after doing this survey.
1. Each group design a online survey using Forms of GoogleDocs base on the following questions (you can add more). Send this survey to your family members in your group.
2. Analysis the information you collected and post the survey result on your blog. You can use Text or Graphic to present your information.

Questions:
a. How frequent do you buy new clothes?
b. Will you bring own bags when go shopping or always ask for plastic/ paper bag?
c. Do you always buy new electronic product (for trendy)?     d. Will you bring bottle for water when going out?
e. Can you finish all the food you order in every meal?
f. How long do you take shower approximately every day?
g. Will you turn off all electronic product before your sleep? [Not in standby mode]
h. Do you usually drive or take public transportation?

Form your group

Students form in groups of four and go through the following tasks:

1. Create a Blog for your group.

2. Create the first post with the following information in your group's blog:
    - Names of group members
    - Student numbers
    - Your photo or group photo

3. Reply this post and post the url of your group's blog, so that other groups can visit your blog too.

4. Work on Task 2, Task 3 and Task 4 in Active World with your group members.

8 Tips to reduce the amount of waste you create

Tips to reduce the amount of waste you create: 

  • Say no to disposable shopping bags. Bring your own reusable ones instead.
  • Choose products that have the least amount of packaging.
  • Buy in bulk when purchasing items like laundry detergent, shampoo, pet food, cat litter, and other household items.
  • Buy unpackaged items in loose bins when available, such as tools and produce.
  • Use what you already have instead of buying something new whenever possible.
  • Buy liquid products that are concentrated.
  • Avoid single serving foods that require extra packaging.
